Rising sea temps bring coral bleaching to Gulf of Thailand 4 April 2016

Photo c/o Bangkok Post The Bangkok Post reports that coral bleaching has been detected at Koh Talu and Koh Leum in Prachuap Khiri Khan province for the first time, and rising water temperatures could make it worse.

Department of Marine and Coastal Resources senior biologist Nalinee Thongtham said the department found about 5% of the coral reef, mainly hump corals, has been bleached. She said sea temperatures are increasing and expected to exceed 30C in some places. If temperatures do not drop, coral bleaching will expand.  More »

Turtle tracking results must lead to new thinking on habitat management 1 April 2016

Photo c/o Takahiro Shimada / JCU Mark Rigby, reporting for ABC Far North, cites a study by Dr. Takahiro Shimada and colleagues at James Cook University in Australia. Tracking maps of 113 turtles that had been captured for a variety of reasons were analysed to learn more about their behaviour once released into the wild. Of the 59 turtles released away from the area they were captured in, all but three returned to their original home area with some travelling 100s of km. The remaining 54 turtles were released either in, or very close to, their home area and never strayed. The results have important implications for turtle conservation, particularly where habitat has been irreversibly destroyed by development. It suggests that turtles will still be inclined to return to the home area, but may find no suitable habitat for successful nesting. More »
